Can you guess what flower was on the original Pua Trucker?
No, not that one.
Back in the day, I remember paying close attention to which ear a girl wore her fake tiare on. But when it came time to choose the first flower to put on these hats, I went with the pua na‘u.
Tiare is Tahiti’s gardenia. Pua na‘u is Hawaii’s.
Like many of our native plants, it’s endangered. You won’t find it growing wild on O‘ahu anymore. But thanks to horticulturists, it’s not extinct. They cultivated it from the last remaining wild plants. A few still grow wild on Lāna‘i.
I thought making these hats was a small way to repopulate the flower.
Although I’m not a horticulturist, this is my way of putting more out there.
